MFI INTERNET KEY

keyOur "Rosetta Stone" For Internet Shorthands

Note: This page provides definitions of common abbreviations used by posters at MFI newsgroups.  If you're looking for a glossary of mutual fund terms, you've come to the wrong place -- click here instead.

Why shorthands?  In the interest of time, clarity, and/or bandwidth, writers on the Internet, particularly in newsgroup posts, turn to shorthand tools to convey their message.  The most common such shorthands are abbreviations and "emoticons". The former are simply letters standing for a common phrase, such as "IMO", for "in my opinion".  The latter are typographical characters or symbols used to form a shape or expression (usually a face), such as :-) which would indicate smiling on the part of the writer, when the formed image is rotated 90 degrees clockwise.   However, please remember that even these shorthands are open to interpretation.  Hopefully, when used in conjunction with the written message, the writer will be able to convey the message's tone, and any nuances.

By popular demand, we've included a list of common abbreviations and emoticons. This list is by no means complete, and is only meant as a sampler:  Creative minds have created many, many such shorthands ranging from purely pictorial emoticons, such as Bozo the Clown and Santa, to the "not ready for prime time" emoticons and abbreviations often found in Usenet newsgroups. Some of the emoticons (also called "smileys") are quite clever, and if you'd like to explore this unique world, just type the word "emoticons" into your favorite search engine.

If you know of an abbreviation or emoticon, preferably one you've seen at MFI, that you'd like to add to this page, go to the "Add An Abbreviation" section located at the bottom of the page.
