THE
MFI SPOTLIGHT
Meet
Your MFI Neighbors:
Steve Dunn
California
Mutual
fund investor since: Mutual fund investor since the late 1970's, when I bought
the Vanguard S and P 500 Index fund (after the DOW crashed down to around 600), which I
sold in the early 1980's when the market become "overvalued", and then
"plunged" back into equities after about a 15 year hiatus on April 11, 1997,
about 5000 points up in the Dow later. Nice "timing" skills eh?
Occupation: I'm an "officer of the court", aka a
"lawyer".
Favorite food: Catfish, as served in an upscale Asian restaurant.
Favorite vacation spot: Tie between France, the redrock country of Utah,
and the Grand Tetons
Investment philosophy: Risk avoidance, value oriented passive approach,
using index funds as my primary investment vehicle, who tries to "time" the
market a bit at the "edges". I finally learned my lesson, maybe.
What I like about MFI: The friends I have made, and what I have learned
by being an active participant, and the "rush" I get from having available to me
a friendly site to which I can subject my attempts at creative writing, none of which
would have happened without MFI.
Roberta Meyer
Florida
Mutual
fund investor since: 1983
Occupation: Teacher. This was a mid-life career change. Started as a
nurse.
Favorite food: Chocolate.
Favorite vacation spot: Everywhere I've been. I just like vacations!
Investment philosophy: Buy and hold with momentum for new money.
What I like about MFI: The variety of opinions and the civility of it. It
allows us to disagree and examine various positions and theories.
Carrie Webber
California
Mutual
fund investor since: 1993
Occupation: I do contract work for various government agencies relating
to energy conservation.
Favorite food: Chocolate.
Favorite vacation spot: Probably Disneyland. I've gone at least once a
year, every year since 1991.
Investment philosophy: Definitely buy and hold.
What I like about MFI: The people. There is such a wealth of knowledge
represented by the posters, and everyone is willing to share, whether it is advice to a
newbie or a discourse on charting techniques.
David Snowball
Iowa
Mutual
fund investor since: 1994 ('84, if you count CREF's retirement annuities, but the
choices were really limited)
Occupation: Associate Professsor of Speech Communication, Augustana
College. For most of the past 15 years, I've been the College's debate coach.
Favorite food: Chicken! Baked, grilled, saladed, sauteed, stuffed,
roasted, parmesan'd, moo shu'd
Favorite vacation spot: Door County, Wisconsin - the peninsula just above
Green Bay. It's a lot like Cape Cod, with fewer tourists.
Investment philosophy: All of the research in the world doesn't do you
any good unless you act on it. When you become convinced that a particular action is
right, stop fretting and act.
What I like about MFI: I'm passionate about teaching and learning and
they're not really separable activities. You haven't really learned something until you
can teach it to someone else. And you can't teach unless you're learning constantly. MFI
is the forum where I have - by far - learned the most and where I've had the best
opportunity to share some of what I've learned.
Bill Jones
Connecticut

Occupation: Professor of Computer Science and Math

Favorite vacation spots: Puerto Rico
Investment philosophy: Buy-and-hold in bull markets, cut-and-run in bears
What I like about MFI: So many people are willing to give serious,
constructive, courteous, and well-thought out responses to the ideas I toss out. These
discussions have metamorphosed my entire investment philosophy over the past two years.

a purpose"
